Perfect Peace

"I will extend a river"
(Isaiah 66:12)

One of the prettiest hymns of all time, "Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace," was written in 1850 by Samuel
Sebastian Wesley.  My introduction to it was by way of the Moody Chorale back in the 1960’s.  Wow, what a
blissful experience.  You know, Scripture places a lot of emphases on peace.  In fact, Jesus told us He’d give
us His perfect peace.  The Bible also tells us that this peace is so significant and seemingly illusive that it’s
above our human ability to fully comprehend it, but we’re never told we can’t attain it.

Corrie ten Boom, the Dutch hero famous for her hiding place in the mid 1940’s, said that "God does not have
problems; only plans."  She is a perfect example of someone who found peace in the midst of war, in the
middle of confusion and treacherous times.  There was no universal peace in the land.  Hers was personal
and intimate.  Like a flowing fountain God’s perfect peace floods the human soul regardless of external
pressures and it’s attainable by the spoken name of Jesus.

There’s a reason that Jesus is likened to living water.  “Whoever believes in Me.....will find rivers of living
water flowing from within them.” (John 7:38)  Jesus said that “whoever drinks the water I give them will never
thirst.  Indeed, the water I give them will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)
Daily we can draw from that fountain, the fountain of life which refreshes with a peace
beyond our understanding.

The advantage of every believer is the access to God’s peace, to experience intimacy with Him, and
ultimately to know an eternal existence with Him.  Bonded with Jesus who is the true fountain of life, releases
God’s favor upon us.  Better than the world’s pseudo peace, our peace is perfect and flawless,
abundant and perpetual.
